Equipment
A solid 8 weight rod is a perfect for this fishery. Winds can come up, so faster action can also be advantageous. Single hand spey techniques are very effective in this river. A 9.5 or 10 foot rod would also be good to bring along. Spey rods are encouraged as well. Some of the channels are narrow so a single hander is best, but the lower river has broad bars that can spread the fish out.
You’ll also need to bring your own flies, leaders and tackle. Limited access to tackle at the lodge, but rentail gear is also available. Please let us know ahead of time if you would lke to rent geat from the lodge.
9 - 12 ft. leaders tapered to 15 lb are best. Weighted flies include black/white dolly llama, clousers (white/chartruese) & starlight leeches (black & purple).
*Please inquire for full fly & gear list.
Clothing
Fall can be an unpredictable time in Alaska, so a waterproof shell as well as warm under layers and moisture-wicking base layers are a must. If it’s cold, you’ll want to layer like you’re going skiing. Although it’s not likely, snow is possible this time of year, and wind is likely. Gear up accordingly. Fingerless gloves, multiple socks, and warm, waterproof hats can make an otherwise chilly day on the water much more pleasing.
