Fishing Details

Equipment

A solid 5 weight rod is a must, and if you’re ready to focus on streamers, a fast-action 6 weight rod is preferable. 4 weight rods have a place protecting light tippets, but a word of caution. These fish are strong, healthy and wild! Whichever stick you choose, make sure it has the backbone to land a bruiser.

You’ll also need 9 ft. leaders tapered to 5x (nymphs and dries), 7.5 ft. leaders tapered to 3x (streamers), and spools od 3x – 6x, fluorocarbon preferred. Streamer fishing can be excellent as well. Slow sink tip fly lines are best, and a weighted fly can help to vary depth. The slow sink helps with the weed beds that form in the fall.

The Missouri can be super slick, especially below Holter dam. Felt boots are allowed and preferred. Although cleats are nice when wading, generally guides frown upon having folks with cleats in their drift boats. A wading staff is always recommended.

Clothing

Fall can be an unpredictable time in Montana, so a waterproof shell as well as warm under layers and moisture-wicking base layers are a must. If it’s cold, you’ll want to layer like you’re going skiing. Although it’s not likely, snow is possible this time of year, and wind is likely. Gear up accordingly. Fingerless gloves, multiple socks, and warm, waterproof hats can make an otherwise chilly day on the water much more pleasant.
